Double lead for Volland Racing – Zagumennov extends championship lead, Misyulya takes second spot

Every year, the elites of the rallycross circuit converge for the magic weekend in the Swedish town of Höljes. Over 100 competitors are watched by 35,000 spectators in their struggle for championship points for the WorldRX and EuropeanRX. With 26 participants, the Super1600 is presenting the strongest group so far in the current European championship of 2014.

The qualification of the Volland Racing Fabia pilots was crowned by the 17-year old Kasparas Navickas, who clocked the best time in the first heat. After four heats, Zagumennov rounded up the qualification in second position while Navickas came third. Nikita Misyulya had to overcome a scare. With a black flag hanging over him for the 2nd heat, he excelled by clocking the best times in the 3rd and 4th heats respectively to secure a place in the semi-final.

“In rallycross, everything is possible in the final race “says Rolf Volland too: “We have a very strong team in the VR Fabias.“ Kasparas Navickas ended the first semi-final in second position and Nikita Misyulya was also able to fight his way through to third position having started from the last row of the grid and thus qualified for the finals of the top 6. Sergej Zagumennov subsequently won the 2nd semi-final thereby positioning his Fabia in the first row of the grid in the finals. All three VR Fabias were thus qualified for the last race of the day – the finals of the Super1600.

In the finals too, Zagumennov would leave nothing to chance as he took the lead right from the start only to suffer a slip from the racing line towards the end of the first round and was displaced by the Czech Ondrej Smetana. Fully determined, Zagumennov took advantage of a tiny loophole created by the Fiesta pilot one curve later and regained leadership right till the end and victory was his in the 5th race of the EuropeanRX 2014. With this third victory, Zagumennov has further extended his leadership in the European championship.

Nikita Misyulya has now advanced to second position in the overall championship standing. The VR Fabia pilot shot forward from the last row of the grid, grabbed the fourth position and put his teammate Navickas under immense pressure. Spectators and TV reporters had to hold their breath for a moment, when he overtook the Lithuanian at the fastest downhill stretch of “Höljesbanen”. They both jumped over the ramp at the same time. They reached the finishing line as third and fourth with Misyulya climbing the Podium.

The VR Fabia pilots Zagumennov (130 points) and Misyulya (102) thus occupy positions one and two in the championship. With 69 points, Kasparas Navickas occupies the sixth position in his first ever season at the rallycross.

The 6th race of the FIA WorldRX and EuropeanRX will be taking place already next weekend at the rallycross circuit the “Jules Tacheny Circuit” in Belgium. The fourth race of the past five weeks will usher in a brief summer break.

The FIA European rallycross Championship 2014 Super1600 will be rolled out within the scope of the new European events for the FIA World rallycross Championship for Super Cars.
