The Hilmer Motorsport team picked up their first points of the season at the climax in Monte Carlo. Nick Yelloly (#24) finished in 10th place on Saturday and in doing so won his first point in the GP2 series. The young Brit also drove the fastest lap and was rewarded with two additional points for doing so. The GP2 novice set the foundation for two finishes in the top 10 in qualification on Friday. The qualifying session in Monte Carlo is traditionally split into two groups due to the short course length, and Yelloly got stuck in to group B. Rain started to fall shortly before the qualifying session for group A got underway and the course became very wet and difficult to drive. The rain did stop, however, and the course dried as the second group were underway. Yelloly was able to take advantage and drove his best time on his last fast-lap, which was enough to secure him fourth place in his group. This entailed that the youngster Yelloly, who was driving in a GP2 car for the first time in Monte Carlo, landed in seventh on the starting grid. Teammate Johnny Cecotto (#25), who was in the first qualifying group and had to battle with the difficult weather conditions, qualified as 11th in the group and started on Saturday from 21st place on the grid.
The race on Saturday started turbulently with the start having to be aborted following a false start from one of the drivers. There were several crashes and accidents in the course of the race (which is not uncommon on the roads of Monte Carlo), and the Virtual Safety Car had to be deployed several times. Yelloly used this to his advantage and made his obligatory pit stop and changed his tires. After the pit stop, the Brit found himself in ninth position and drove the fastest lap of the race. He fought for eighth place with Marciello for several laps but was overtaken shortly before the end of the race by King and crossed the finish line in 10th. As overtaking is very difficult in Monte Carlo, Cecotto was hardly able to make up any positions and finished the race in 20th. The starting position for the Venezuelan was hardly the best for the sprint race, as was made clear after Sunday’s start. Cecotto crashed with Amberg and had to return to the pits. Unfortunately the damage to Cecotto’s car was too severe, so much so that he had to retire from the race in the first round. On Sunday Yelloly narrowly missed out on points with a ninth place finish. The GP2 novice was, however, rewarded for a successful race weekend with three points
